Overview
The browser included with some ViewBoard Android systems is based on Chromium, an open-source web browser project. While suitable for basic web browsing, Chromium may not include all of the proprietary features, media codecs, security enhancements, and compatibility components found in commercial browsers such as Google Chrome.
As a result, certain websites and web applications may not load properly or may have limited functionality. Installing a full-featured browser such as Mozilla Firefox or another trusted third-party browser can improve compatibility and provide a more consistent browsing experience.
Symptoms
You may experience one or more of the following issues when using the built-in Chromium browser:
- Websites do not display correctly.
- Certain web applications fail to load.
- Missing functionality on modern websites.
- Video playback issues on some streaming platforms.
- Authentication or Single Sign-On (SSO) problems.
- Web conferencing or collaboration tools may not function as expected.
Cause
Chromium and Google Chrome are built on the same browser engine but are not identical products.
| Feature | Chromium | Google Chrome |
|---|---|---|
| Browser Engine | Chromium Open Source Project | Chromium Open Source Project |
| Google Services Integration | Limited or Not Included | Included |
| Automatic Updates | May Not Be Available | Included |
| DRM-Protected Content (Netflix, Disney+, etc.) | Often Unsupported | Supported |
| Proprietary Media Codecs | Limited | Included |
| Website Compatibility | May Vary | Generally Highest Compatibility |
| Security Enhancements | Basic Open-Source Features | Additional Google Security Features |
Because Chromium is an open-source browser, it may not include all proprietary components required by certain websites and applications. This can result in reduced compatibility compared to fully featured browsers such as Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox.

Additional Information
What Is an APK?
An APK (Android Package Kit) is the installation file format used by Android devices.
Comparable installation file formats include:
- .MSI for Microsoft Windows
- .DMG for macOS
Downloading and installing an APK is similar to installing software on a Windows PC or a Mac computer.
Best Practices
- Download APK files only from trusted and reputable sources.
- Keep installed browsers updated to the latest available version.
- Verify website compatibility using a full-featured browser before troubleshooting network or device-related issues.
- Use Firefox, Chrome (if supported), or another mainstream browser for the best compatibility with modern web applications.
Notes
ViewSonic does not develop, maintain, or certify third-party browsers.
Browser functionality, compatibility, updates, and security features are determined by the browser vendor. Installing an alternative browser may improve compatibility with websites and web applications that are not fully supported by the built-in Chromium browser.
